The exhibition for the Los Angeles Housing Department (formally known as Los Angeles Housing + Community Investment Department ) was located on the Department of Cultural Affairs’s Bridge Gallery at LA City Hall.  “Phases & Faces of Affordable Housing in Los Angeles” exhibition showcased the many phases of affordable housing development and preservation, and the faces of diverse individuals and families who are in need of or are the living beneficiaries of affordable housing programs in Los Angeles. Through words and pictures, the exhibit highlighted the historic development of affordable housing in the City of LA. (See explanation LAHD)

Impact DesignHub graphic designers created and designed graphic material—large scale panels, historical time-line, information graphics, that were hung and displayed in the Bridge Gallery at City Hall during the exhibition dates. 

The “Faces” of the exhibition featured photographs of homeless individuals by David Blumenkrantz, Professor in the Department of Journalism—(One of Us Project).  CSUN’s Social Impact DesignHub designers worked on the “Phases” part of the exhibition by creating an historical timeline of the department’s history, 13 panels of various types of affordable housing in LA, as well as all the branding and promotional materials for the Exhibition.

Process

For this project, students began their research process before the semester started due to the tight deadlines for concept development and execution as well as printing.

Objectives:

• • Inform and educate the public about the history of affordable housing, current housing efforts, and strategies to combat homelessness in Los Angeles (including City initiatives; funding sources)

• • Introduce the public to individuals and families who live in and/or seek affordable housing by sharing their stories expressed through diverse artistic mediums

• Dispel the racial and stereotypical myths often associated with affordable and homeless housing.

Final results:

• • Brand identity for the exhibition title, Phases and Faces of Affordable Housing

• • Invitation, flyer, poster and banner promoting the exhibition
  • Email blasts
• • Exhibition catalog

• • 13 different 52 x 52 large scale panels on developments, people, and structure of the department

• • Wall time-line:
    Floor and wall decals spread across the gallery promoting the concept, YIMBY, “Yes in my Back Yard”
  • Social Media plan and content design

Description of the Organization:

The Los Angeles Housing and Community Investment Department works to create viable urban communities by advocating for safe and livable neighborhoods through the promotion, development and preservation of decent, safe, affordable housing and by expanding economic opportunities and public services, principally for low- and moderate income persons.

25 years ago, a formalized and focused effort to increase the supply of affordable housing in Los Angeles was started with the creation of the City of Los Angeles Affordable Housing Commission and the Housing Preservation and Production Department (HPPD), which has evolved into what is now called the Los Angeles Housing + Community Investment Department (HCIDLA).
